Masks are an integral part of a number of traditional and folk dance forms in India. Mukha of Dakshin Dinajpur district of West Bengal is one of them. The dance generally narrates mythological stories and folktales. Mukha is the colloquial term for Mukhos meaning masks. They are made of gamhar wood. A single log is curved to give the shapes of different deities and other characters from everyday life. Use of solid and vivid colours is common in such dance forms. To wear and carry the heavy masks all the while performing the dance that includes a whole lot of acrobatic stances, the dancers wrap a length of cloth around the face and head.

Madhab Sarkar and his troop perform Mukha dance in places far and near. They have achieved a handsome number of awards and accolades for their excellent performance. He and his family make the masks for sale as well. Adaptation of the Mukhas are sold as showpieces. 

A couple or two handicraft fairs in a year, organised mainly by the state and central government departments, are the main outlets for selling the masks while bookings for performance of the dance follow suit. Rest of the time these artists do a number of odd jobs to meet the ends.
